Fundraising in challenging times: when action matters

On June 5, 2025, Sofia hosted an event that offered a fresh perspective on the fundraising profession and demonstrated that solidarity is not just an emotion, but a strategy for the future. The international conference “Fundraising in Challenging Times”, organized by the Bulgarian Center for Not-for-Profit Law (BCNL) at the initiative of the Fundraising Club Bulgaria, brought together over 200 participants — representatives of non-governmental organizations, donors, business leaders, and experts from across Europe.

Over the course of 11 sessions and with more than 30 international and Bulgarian speakers, the conference explored not only new technologies and approaches to fundraising, but also raised deeply moral and societal questions: How can civil liberties be defended in a shrinking democratic space? How can giving become an act of resistance and commitment?

The conference is part of a series of events promoting cross-sector partnerships and engagement with local communities – the CSOs Summit, the final forum under the BIRDS in BG project, co-funded by the European Union. The project is a joint initiative of the Bulgarian Fund for Women (BFW), the Bulgarian Center for Not-for-Profit Law (BCNL), and the Impact Drive Foundation (IDF). Its goal is to support the development of a sustainable civil society, including by strengthening the capacity of small and local civil society organizations in Bulgaria that work for social change, advocate for, promote, and raise awareness of human rights, democracy, the rule of law, and European values.
