Creative workshops with the jury of CIVIC ALARM CLOCK

1 April 2021

In April, 2021 we will organize a series of creative workshops with the jury of the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK competition, which will provoke your imagination. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marin Bodakov ("Text"), Velina Mavrodinova ("Illustration") and Miroslav Marinov ("Photography") will give valuable guidance, practical advice and techniques on how to fully develop your creative idea and turn it into text, photography or illustration of high artistic value. The meetings are suitable both for the candidates in this year's competition and for anyone who wants to develop their creative skills and talent.

The workshops are free and will take place every Wednesday in April, from 3 pm to 4.30 pm, online at Zoom.

This year the fourth edition of the competition for socially engaged art CIVIC ALARM CLOCK will be held from April 1 to June 1, 2021.

At the heart of the creative challenge will be the rights and freedoms that are the salt of civil society. The right of association, the right to peaceful assembly (protests) and freedom of speech are being recharged with new content and a way of exercising in the virtual world. How do you perceive this digital transformation - more opportunities, more freedom or more limitations and challenges?

What does your imagination say?

We will expect you to share it in the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK competition by June 1 (see details for the competition below, and expect the start of the application on April 1).

 

Workshop for creative thoughts with Assoc. Prof. Dr. MARIN BODAKOV

| "Text" Category |

 

Date: April 14, 2021 | Wednesday |

Time: from 3 pm to 4.30 pm

Location: in Zoom

Before the meeting: We recommend that you prepare in advance with your short text or an excerpt from a text, which will then receive individual feedback from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marin Bodakov. Please send the text to e-mail: budilnik@bcnl.org no later than April 11, 2021 (Sunday) so that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bodakov can get acquainted with it.

During the meeting: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marin Bodakov will share the most important criteria that the jury monitors in the evaluation of works. He will pay special attention to each of the previously sent texts, giving individual feedback and comments on them. If you want to apply for the competition, you will have a great chance to receive specific suggestions on how to further develop and upgrade your work so that it ranks among the best in the "Text" category of the competition.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marin Bodakov is a lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”. Among his most recent publications are the monograph “Criticism and Sincerity”, “The case of Jordan Marinopolski ”(2019)” and the collection of poems “Bear of Fear ”(2018). He is a regular author of the site www.toest.bg on literary and social issues.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bodakov is a member of the jury in the  "Text" category of the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK competition in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

 

Workshop for creative shoots with Miroslav Marinov

| "Photography" Category |

 

Date: April 21, 2021 | Wednesday |

Time: from 3 pm to 4.30 pm

Location: in Zoom

During the meeting: Miroslav will present in an attractive way the main guidelines on how to recreate a desired concept with the means of photography. The practical element of the meeting will be directly focused on learning through experience - will make a detailed analysis of photos of already established authors, transmitting socially significant messages. It will help you enrich the means of expression that you can use in the visual world. How important the role of light and composition is in bringing out the true message of the photo are just some of the topics that Miroslav will touch on.

Miroslav Marinov is a freelance photographer, photography teacher and founder of the Sofia School of Photography.

Miroslav is a member of the jury in the "Photography" category of the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK competition in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

 

Workshop for creative visions with Velina Mavrodinova

| "Illustration" Category |

 

Date: April 28, 2021 | Wednesday |

Time: from 3 pm to 4.30 pm

Location: in Zoom

During the meeting: Velina Mavrodinova will answer the questions that are interesting to the participants regarding the creation of an influential illustration that speaks on an abstract topic, such as the topic of rights.  She will give you valuable advice on how to clear your concept and successfully bring to the fore the meaning and message you want to convey through visual forms. Velina will share specific examples of means of expression, style and technique that you can use in the drawing process, so that if you apply, your illustration will have every chance to be among the best in the competition this year.

Velina Mavrodinova is a co-founder and longtime creative director of Enthusiasm - a leading branding company. With her 30 years of experience as a graphic designer, art director and illustrator. She is behind the construction of some of the leading and very popular brands on the Bulgarian market, successfully established on international markets.

Velina is a member of the jury in the "Illustration" category of the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK competition in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

 

For the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK competition in 2021

  • The competition will be open for participation from April 1 to June 1, 2021.
  • You can use one of the following questions as a starting point for your creative idea:

>> How do we fight censorship, misinformation and fake news in the online environment - the intersection between freedom of expression, critical thinking and telling lies.      

>> How do we protest from virtual squares - digital tools that help to express a civil position on important public issues.

>> How do we associate and work online in the name of common causes - the voice of civil society organizations and their communities in the online space, new forms of unification and association in the virtual boundless world.

  • In the summer of 2021, the works will be evaluated by a jury with many years of professional experience (see who are the people of the jury below).
  • While the jury evaluates, the audience will be able to nominate on Facebook the best works in each of the three categories. The artistic works will be published in thematic albums on the Facebook page of the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK. Everyone can vote by sharing their favorite images on their personal wall on Facebook. Voting will be open from 15 June to 15 July 2021.
  • The authors of the works from the three categories, evaluated in "First Place" by the jury, as well as those who have received a special award "The Audience Choice" as a result of the online voting, will be awarded with cash prize, special prize items and participation in an interview for Spisanie 8.
  • On August 26, 2021 at the CIVIC ALARM CLOCK FESTIVAL in Sofia we will award the distinguished authors. Their works will be presented in an open-air exhibition in the capital's city park in front of "Ivan Vazov" National Theatre and distributed in an online exhibition.
