Come to visit the exhibition “Activism in Action: the Power to Save Urban Nature” 2024

The exhibition can be viewed from 22 August to 5 September 2024 in front of the Summer Stage "KINO & BAR CABANA" in the National palace of Culture park space

The exhibition "Activism in Action: the Power to Save Urban Nature" presents over 30 photographs, illustrations and texts by 17 artists who advocate for our right to live in a clean and healthy environment. The works tell creative stories of activism that cares for rivers, soil and air, protects forests, and preserves Bulgaria's biodiversity. All of them were awarded in the Civic Alarm Clock Vol.7 socially engaged art competition.

The exhibition can be viewed from August 22 to September 5, 2024 in front of the Summer Stage "KINO & BAR CABANA" in the National palace of Culture park park space in Sofia.

The exhibition and the competition are organized by the Bulgarian Center for Not-for-Profit Law (BCNL). Through the initiatives the Foundation has been connecting the world of art with the world of rights for 7 years with the conviction that through the power of art we can defend our rights.

To the question of why it is important to advocate for urban nature, the organizer shares, "Today, over 55% of the people on the planet live in cities, making the urban environment the primary habitat of humankind. By 2050, this percentage is expected to increase to 68%. Living in an ecologically balanced environment is a fundamental human right, also recognised by the Bulgarian Constitution. According to Article 55 of the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria "citizens have the right to a healthy and favourable environment in accordance with established standards and norms. They are obliged to protect the environment".

Against this backdrop, earlier in the year, BCNL extended an invitation to creative activists for whom human rights are an ideal to participate with the seventh edition of the Civic Alarm Clock competition to defend our right to live in balance with nature and its inhabitants through creative language, which is their super power.

The authors of the winning works will be awarded during the Arts and Rights Festival CIVIC ALARM CLOCK 2024 – on 31 August /Saturday/ in South Park – Sofia. For the fourth year, the event celebrates the power of creative activism and an awake civic spirit. The festival offers a rich program of creative workshops for children and grown-ups, led by socially engaged artists, educational games featuring human rights organizations and creative activities moderated by civic activists.

The support for BCNL for the realization of the exhibition is provided by America for Bulgaria Foundation and Sofia Municipality.
